Vessel Water Pollution Insurance

A vessel pollution incident can create substantial cleanup costs, environmental damage claims and legal liabilities. HAML helps vessel owners and operators review specialist water pollution coverage through markets including WQIS and Safe Harbor.

Over 300 GT

Certificate of Financial Responsibility (COFR)

Subject to applicable exceptions, vessels over 300 gross tons operating in U.S. waters generally require evidence of financial responsibility under U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Coverage or an acceptable guaranty may support the COFR application process.

400 GT or More

Non-Tank Vessel Response Plan (NTVRP)

Applicable self-propelled non-tank vessels carrying oil as propulsion fuel and operating in U.S. navigable waters generally require an approved response plan at 400 gross tons or more. The plan and pollution insurance are separate arrangements.

Pollution coverage may address insured spill-response and cleanup expenses, third-party damages, natural resource damage and legal defense, depending on the policy. HAML can review the vessel's tonnage, operations, cruising waters and existing P&I arrangements to identify appropriate market options.

Requirements vary by vessel type, measurement method and operating circumstances. A pollution insurance policy does not itself constitute an approved NTVRP or issued COFR.

Yacht & Marine Insurance Questions

What does Hull & Machinery insurance cover?

Hull & Machinery generally addresses insured physical loss of or damage to the vessel and covered machinery, subject to deductibles, exclusions and policy conditions.

How is P&I different from H&M?

Protection & Indemnity (P&I) principally responds to covered third-party and certain maritime liability exposures, whereas H&M primarily addresses insured damage to the vessel itself. Actual coverage depends on policy terms.

Do yachts over 300 GT need pollution insurance in U.S. waters?

Vessels over 300 gross tons generally fall under U.S. financial responsibility (COFR) requirements, subject to exceptions. Applicable non-tank vessels of 400 gross tons or more may also need a Non-Tank Vessel Response Plan (NTVRP). Pollution insurance and financial guarantees can help address some associated liabilities, but requirements should be reviewed for each vessel.

Can HAML arrange insurance for charter yachts?

HAML can help owners and captains review insurance options for eligible private and charter operations, including disclosed commercial use, passenger activity, crewing and operating areas.
